My favorite spices are Sumac and Zaatar, and there is a lot of debate about the ethnic and cultural identities of those spices and the dishes they belong to.
This is very similar to some of the struggles that Arabs in the Arab diaspora are going through. It's hard to find one label that fully defines them or their identities.
The good news is you don't have to eliminate any parts of your identity to fit within one label. Whether you identify as an Arab, as a Middle Eastern, North African, Assyrian, Copt, or any of the other identities that belong to the region, you can create your own cookbook of recipes, songs, identities, and values and supports that do fully capture you.
